The project is supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Youth, Canton Sarajevo. Prof. Dr. Hadziabdic is collaborating with the Development Planning Institute of the Canton of Sarajevo and IUS students to conduct research on how building shape, height, and their relative position affect the efficiency of external ventilation and air quality. The focus is on understanding the physics of airflow in real-life conditions around buildings and how different shapes and heights impact the efficiency of external ventilation on a micro and local scale. The project team will use Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with specialized computational code and advanced models of airflow and turbulence to conduct the research.
The research aims to answer the following questions: - How does the shape and height of the building impact the efficiency of external ventilation of space on a micro (up to 100 m distance) and local (up to 1000 m distance) scale? - Is there a correlation between the shape and height of the building and the size of the poorly ventilated zone in the outdoor space? - How does the relative position of buildings affect the quality of external ventilation on a micro and local scale? - What are the appropriate guidelines for construction in Sarajevo basin regarding external ventilation? The research can help establish good construction practices in Sarajevo Canton, which will minimize the negative impact on the external ventilation of urban spaces based on scientific arguments.
